Using "location" while searching members

Just Ben said Jun 19, 5:46 AM:

Hey all!

I tried to use the “location” entry box when searching for people. So for example I type in The Netherlands, but then I just get random people in results from all over the world. I'm not sure if this is a defect or maybe I'm doing something wrong?
In any case it would be really great if I can just search for people per country!

Hope I can get some feedback,
Ben

No, it does seem to be a glitch.  Good catch!  However, notice that if you use the other “location” search (from the drop-down), it does work.  I'll let the devs know about this.

I know the other location does work, but it works only on cities and since the countries are only displayed as flags, it's impossible to search. And since the majority of this community is American I can understand why specific location searching for cities is more useful than the country of USA.
But people like me, who are not American, have lesser people they can connect with from their country. So then it would be nice if we can search for people in the whole of our country. I would really appreciate it that this possibility gets implemented, since I would like to connect to people from a some specific countries.

Hey,

I was wondering if there is any update about the location problem already? And whether it will be possible to search for people per country?

Thanks!
Ben

Hi Ben:

I have found the solution for you.

In the drop down box choose “location”.

Under that type in “Netherlands” - leave out “the”.

Then where it says “Location” just below that, type in “Netherlands” again.

I think there were close to two dozen of your country-persons listed there.

Have a great day!

Hey Gemstar,

Thanks for the tip, but I'm afraid I already did that before. The thing is a lot of my fellow dutch people did fill in their country, but it's only shown as a flag. So what I was asking if it's possible for us to search for members on the flag country, not only the text they filled in.

I hope I made my point clearer this time? :)

Best wishes!
Ben

Hi Just Ben, I have often wondered the same, and await an answer. I am pretty darn sure one cannot search for flags….

Three workarounds:

One: Put in the major cities in the Netherlands, in your location searches.

Two: at the very top of each page there is a search the site field. Type in Dutch, then try also searching the major cities one by one, and also type in Netherlands there. You might have to plow through a lot of irrelevancies, but you might find some folks.

Three: Go through the Friends lists of the Netherlands folks you do know.  This is of course time-consuming, but people tend to know folks from their own country. I assume you might start with folks who know lots of folks, like Arjan Kindermans. in Amsterdam.

You could even email Arjan or his friend Margreet and ask them for names of country-folks in the Gaia Community.

Happy hunting and community-building,
