Do you believe in Clearing Space to make room?

Kyo said Jun 6, 2007, 5:44 AM:

Space everywhere– in your house, in your inbox, in your car, your office, your refridgerator…

To make room for new gifts and blessings.

Is it crucial, or optional?

Yes, I do, but it doesn't come naturally.  For most of my life, I was a pack-rat.  My wife is the opposite.  She has always been big on making space for new things by getting rid of something old.  After many years together I eventually gave in and started getting rid of some stuff.  After I while, I started to like it.  It is liberating to clear space and not just collect more and more “stuff”.  So, while I am not as disciplined about it as my wife, I do clear space regularly, and especially after acquiring something new.

In Fung Shui it is the correct thing to do.
And they say for study -and uncluttered room is like
have an uncluttered brain.
I know I feel better when all is in order -although I have
to frantically change the furniture sometimes for it  to
seem “right” !

Hi Kyo! We haven’t spoken in awhile. I hope you’re well. It’s been my experience that clearing out space is really beneficial. In order to attract more (whether it be more peace, more health, more abundance, more creativity, etc.) clearing out the old has really helped me make room for the new.

I ask you to remember what it felt like to you when you cleaned out a closet, or cleared off your desk, etc. For me it always felt like I was was lifting a weight off of my shoulders. The energy felt lighter.

I’ve used this principle in my personal life and my work life over and over again. Whenever I feel “stuck”, whether it’s in my personal growth or with my creativity, I clear some space. Last year I even parted ways with a large client of mine that was not a good fit for either one of us. At first it was a little scary because this client paid me about 1/4 of my income at the time. However, by letting that client leave it opened the door for three new clients. I did nothing to prospect for those clients; they literally just “showed up.” And those three more than made up for the income I lost.

I’ve recommended this principle in my workshops and have heard all kinds of astounding stories from attendees. I recommend to them that they clear out space with the intention that they are making room for something new to come into their lives that will serve them better. In my client example, the three new clients were all ideal clients for me, far more fufilling to work with than the former client, and together more than made up for the income I lost.

In the past I wasn’t Suzy Homemaker, either at home or in my office. I let things pile up and accumulate. But now that doesn’t feel good to me so I do a much better job of putting things in their place and keeping my space around me clutter-free. I can honestly say that when I walk into my office in the morning and my desk is cleaned off and things are all neat and tidy, I feel good! And I know I create more easily in that environment. I’ve never been a neat freak but now I make it a habit to tidy up my desk each and every day before I leave the office so I’m not walking in to piles (which I’m really good at making) or papers strewn all over that haven’t been dealt with.

Like anything else, for me this is always a work in progress. Some days I’m much better at it and some days I’m so busy things start to pile up on me again. That’s how I know the difference. When I’m diligent about keep my space clear, things flow better. When things get messy again, I feel bogged down. So then I know it’s time to stop and clear space before even starting the next project. I hope this is helpful.

Dear Janet,

How true are your words and how much I need to hear them.  It's funny because this is something I already know but have not done.  Call it laziness perhaps or simply choosing spending time with my family as a higher priority than cleaning when I have time away from work.  At any rate I know I need to clear out a lot of things around my house and even at work.  Time is always the issue it seems and there are always things that tend to be more critical than cleaning (this goes double at work as I have a lot of customers to keep happy).  My walk-in closet at home has become a lean-in closet so much so that I rarely open the door which of course creates another pile somewhere else in my bedroom.  I am one of those people who hates to throw things away or get rid of them because I may want them one day.  Not exactly a hoarder or pack rat (I used to be a pack rat but have substantially improved there) but just someone who is sure that the moment I get rid of something I'll find a use for it.  Crazy isn't it?  I know I must make a hard and fast rule that if I haven't used or needed something in a certain period of time then it must go to Good Will or in the trash.  However knowing and doing are two different things.  Oy vey!

All that said I am feeling empowered by simply reading your words and promise that as soon as it is humanly possible I am going to begin to clear out those things in my home and office that are nothing but junk or useless things.  I discovered doing this in my life in regard to relationships years ago and found the freedom from relationships that brought stress, trouble or weighed me down that I found was absolutely wonderful.  I understand now, with your loving words, that I must apply this also to my material life and my surroundings.  I can't thank you or the Universe enough for bringing this to my attention.

I am at this time struggling between financial security and leaving my job to write for a living.  I have not been published but I know what I write is quite publishable and would be of interest to many who enjoy reading.  I know that without risk there is no gain but there is something holding me back.  Not fear exactly but just a feeling that by quitting my job and losing the income it brings would be letting my family down.  I know I can be a successful writer but I also want to have a roof over my head and food on the table.  I'm not talking about losing a life of luxury by making some cutbacks…I'm talking about contributing to the household in a way that will enable us to survive day to day.  Funny thing is that I know exactly what I should do and yet I don't do it.  Boy do I need a good swift kick in the pants!  I guess I just don't feel that putting my desires ahead of my families needs as a good thing to do.  My husband fully supports me but yet I still waiver.  Boy sometimes life can be a real roller coaster ride!

Anyhow, thanks so much for your words and the love in them.

Blessings,
Cheryl

Oh, good thoughts!  Kyo, thank you for starting this thread.

I hate housework most of the time.  When I have a good stretch of time to do it, I don't mind too much - because it is then that I clear out the old and “outgrown,” throw it away or give it away, and make room for breathing.  In those times, it can be a good experience.  But the rest of the time - the general “pick it up and put it away,” followed by “remind the children to pick theirs up and get it out of the family room” - ugh!

Some people are naturally more organized than others.  Considering Clearing in this way opens up new avenues of thought.  I probably could use more time in “Clearing out” than “cleaning up!” Thanks.

I think clearing space is crucial.  When our space becomes full of clutter it becomes harder and harder to find what we need, and the important things that would have otherwise stood out become lost in a heap of confusion.

I am constantly cleaning up and maintaining my computer/virtual space, but in the physical world I am such a pack-rat!  When I go through my closet and my boxes of random junk, I store everything all packed up thinking “Well, you never know, this could really come in handy some day!” or “I think I'd like to keep this item for the memories attached to it.”  Over the course of years, though, my living space became so CRAMMED that I felt very limited and unsatisfied.

I just moved into a new apartment and I think I've thrown or given away about half of my belongings because I got sick and tired of those feelings.  It is so strange how liberating it feels to go, “This has no immediate use to me, so I should get rid of it.”  It feels like if I can be so in control of my environment, I can also be in control of the direction of my life!

In my experience, not only is it liberating, its a great way to re-balance the space you have in your home, garage etc.

I admit I am a hoarder and I do have a lot of mess BUT whenever I have done a clearing and even gone to the effort to PLACE items according to Feng Shui, I always get a result

Yep I'm a hoarder too.  Seems I'm always saying, “I know I'll need that one day” when the truth is that if I haven't needed it in the last six months chances are I won't ever need it.  I know I need to clean out some things but have already done a lot in the way of giving away (usually to Goodwill) or throwing away 'stuff' that has become clutter.  It does make one feel liberated for certain and rather like one is making a new beginning, which of course is always an exciting prospect if one chooses to perceive it that way.

As for those things we do 'need' and decide to keep I have found that going to the trouble to organize spaces (closets, pantrys, etc.) will keep things clean and not needing to be cleaned as often leaving us with a lot more time to do the things we enjoy.  My panty used to be the place that got into a mess the fastest and because it became such a mess so quickly it was also the place I cleaned out the least.  Sometimes it got so bad that the pantry stopped being useful to us.  I went to a store that specializes in storage methods and purchased some clear boxes to organize the things in the panty.  Now things get 'out of hand' in there much more infrequently and when they do it takes me about ten minutes to put things back in order where it used to be almost an entire days work!

Change is AWESOME!

Blessings,
Cheryl

Yes Cheryl. I agree. If a thing dont get used in a set cycle of seasonal usage , then, it aint earning it's keep. Not justifying the space it occupies.
Space, with this encroaching appendages of the world, takes on a new value.

As i understand it, astrologically speaking, the last house is the opportunity to dump superfluous baggage, possibly, and alternativily, lumping it around for another session
After hat , one is entering into a new cycle where the superfluous “stuff” will need to be dragged along.
Take the best and leave the rest.

Now if we are speaking in a spiritual sense of course there is no such thing as not enough room.  We are of the Universe and therefore have infinite capacity spiritually.  However I feel the most important part of having the infinite capacity and making everything inside of us work for us is what priority we put on things within.

For instance if we put more priority on being right than on being happy…we will struggle.  If we put more priority on what we think others think than on asking them about their thoughts we will struggle, if we put more priority on amassing financial wealth than on amassing spiritual then also financial wealth then we struggle…I suppose what I'm saying is that there is room for everything and more but the real question is on what things do we place the most importance?

Think about it.  How many people do you know that place more importance on the past and what someone did to them than they put on the now when they can forgive them and begin anew?  How many people do you know that place more importance on fearing the unknown than they do on living in the now?  How many people do you know that put more importance on creating drama around them than on finding a calm happy place to exist regardless of what is going on around them?  We are a part of ALL THAT IS and our capacity is infinite but we must choose what we value and therefore how we are being.

Blessings,
Cheryl

re this matter, found myself considering the archetypes here, creating space and all.
The biblical Job and The count of Monticristo came to mind.
As i understand it, they both had space form about them, their being emptied of all superfluity.
Dont feel able to establish their “overcomming” in order to move on to greater integrity and fullfillment.
The ordeals endured would make sense if that were so.
Any thoughts you might care to share on this.
