Group feature requests

Hi all,

Since Gaia is here and I haven't noticed any significant changes in group features, I thought I'd post my wishlist for 2008.

Group admin:

(1) moderating posts of an individual member: it'd be great to be able to have moderators approve posts by specific members (newbies, guideline breakers) before they reach the group;

(2) membership application approval: rather than just open or invite-only, it would be nice to be able to leave a group open but require that moderators approve the requests;

(3) member search: this has been mentioned over in the Gaia Support pod, but it's such a glaring omission that I thought I'd repeat it here;

(4) lock thread titles: for groups that don't want titles to be changed mid-thread.

And post notification issues:

(A) Put post notification digests in chronological order, rather than the apparent random order they come in now;

(B) Prevent duplicate notifications for individual posts when you have both “Post on Thread I've Posted To” and the group itself set to send notifications individually.

I'll tell ya at the top of my listthese days is to know which members of my pod(s) are on notifications of new posts to that pod.

One possible exception to “all of 'em” – I don't see that the ability to lock or turn off member ability to change thread titles is really important, though, because we can always go in and change the thread title of any post, as part of our ongoing editing ability. Of course, a lock-down would save time. But the ability to ADD a subtitle has proved CRUCIALLY important, as I did to this post just to demonstrate, so the lockdown or out would apply only to members not to administrators. [I do bump up against the character limit for post titles, but have always been able to work around by shortening/editing the main title.]

Dev? Are you volunteering to code? ;)

Short answer: Yes, some of those are on our short-list for the revamp. Some have question marks (albeit with reasons).

Longer answer: I'll sit down and talk to at least one of our developers tomorrow to see how and where (and perhaps, in some cases, whether) we'll create the requirements and space for the rest of those requests. These all have to do with Groups, and we're not doing much with that area until Phase II of the revamp. (To give a sense of the time: our prevamp should be in QA by 9/2; and Phase I–which has more layout and navigational pieces–by 9/30. After that longer-stretch the cycles should come more quickly, as they'll be more functional than re-organizational and we can do speedier little releases.)
