Tao Te Ching

Dana said Nov 5, 2007, 7:51 PM:

1

The tao that can be told
is not the eternal Tao
The name that can be named
is not the eternal Name.

The unnamable is the eternally real.
Naming is the origin
of all particular things.

Free from desire, you realize the mystery.
Caught in desire, you see only the manifestations.

Yet mystery and manifestations
arise from the same source.
This source is called darkness.

Darkness within darkness.
The gateway to all understanding.

This is my goal…to read and meditate on the Tao…I hope you will join me as I integrate these wonderful spiritual truths into my heart.

Have you noticed that everyone wants to put a face on God?  Is God male or female?  Is God an ever changing stream or does God never change?

The Tao states that when you try to put a face on God, you miss God.  If you try to describe God, you fall very short of the truth.

However, God's mysteries may be limitless, but we are all a piece of God, are we not?  I believe that in loving ourselves and each other, we are loving God.  The eternal Source is breathing through our lungs and beating with our hearts.

Love.

Go softly like flowing water, page by page (it matters little which translation)
and enjoy, smile at the wisdom, the humor, the soft nudges.

I also reccommend  The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet.

As one who treads the soft, wet grass of the Tao with humility and dancing jopy, I'm glad you have found it.

I love this book. I get so much out of it every-time I read it. It's truly eternal. It follows you as you grow and get older. It gives you a true insight into immortality.

I don't mind a bit of politics so chapter 80 is one of my favorites. Our fascination with blurring the lines of cultures and borders can only result in problems.

I receive a clue to the underlying current of life in chapter 5, not malevolent, nor benevolent; just there to be used. And always there.

Clues to leadership from chapter 17, exposes the mistakes of our current political leaders who are retarded by elections, polls and popularity.

The most amazing invitation to the philosophy of Tao is given in chapter 48, immediately you realise that like life, there is nothing hard about the Tao, everything you've learnt 'till now is reversed in an intstant.

1. On the Absolute Tao

The Tao the can be told of
Is not the Absolute Tao;
The Names that can be given
Are not Absolute Names.

The Nameless is the origin of Heaven and Earth;
The Named is the Mother of All Things.

Therefore:
Oftentimes, one strips oneself of passion
In order to see the Secret of Life;
Oftentimes, one regards life with passion,
In order to see its manifest forms.

These two (the Secret and its manifestations)
Are (in their nature) the same;
They are given different names
When they become manifest.

They may both be called the Cosmic Mystery:
Reaching from the Mystery into the Deeper Mystery
Is the Gate to the Secret of All Life.

Most humans wish to create permanence.  Most require solidity to hold firmly in hand.  Even those who can make the jump to the “beyond” for lack of that concrete term people like..:P…must compare and conceptualize what they see…for some reasons humans seem to need to do this to determine rightness.  This I dislike immensely, it can be a huge block for communication and feeling the wave.

Overcome the connotations that “darkness” has acquired over the years and 2. understand that light is a phenomenon, something belonging to this universe and, therefore, something physical or material belonging to this phenomenal world - it is not spirit!

When people see some things as beautiful,
other things become ugly.
When people see some things as good,
other things become bad.

Being and non-being create each other.
Difficult and easy support each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low depend on each other.
Before and after follow each other.

Therefore the Master
acts without doing anything
and teaches without saying anything.
Things arise and she lets them come;
things disappear and she lets them go.
She has but doesn't possess,
acts but doesn't expect.
When her work is done, she forgets it.
That is why it lasts forever.

I was very touched with this section because I feel it is encouraging us to change our perception, and understand the yin/yang of all things.  This verse really helped me to overcome frustrated anger…you know…the kind that makes us feel so helpless?  It also teaches me that the true teacher doesn't depend on action and words in order to teach…the deeper level of understanding isn't taught with words.  (second version below)

I am practicing the art of “being”.  :)
Love you to bits.

2.  The Rise of Relative Opposites

When the people of the Earth all know beauty as beauty,
   There arises (the recognition of) ugliness.
When the people of the Earth all know the good as good,
   There arises (the recognition of) evil.

Therefore:
   Being and non-being interdepend in growth;
   Difficult and easy interdepend in completion;
   Long and short interdepend in contrast;
   High and low interdepend in position;
   Tones and voice interdepend in harmony;
   Front and behind interdepend in company.

Therefore the Sage:
  Manages affairs without action;
  Preaches the doctrine without words;
  All things take their rise, but he does not turn away from them;
  He gives them life, but does not take possession of them;
  He acts, but does not appropriate;
  Accomplishes, but claims no credit.
  It is because he lays claim to no credit
  That the credit cannot be taken away from him.

What is described is “duality”, a fundamental phenomenon of this world of the universe, a phenomenon of our creation. In physics this is the law of  “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” and in life this is the law of karma. In physical life we see and experience this duality but in our spiritual state it is non-existent. With enlightenment we escape this duality.

If you overvalue possessions,

by weakening their ambition

He helps people lose everything
they know, everything they desire,
and creates confusion
in those who think that they know.

Practice not-doing,
and everything will fall into place.

3.  Action Without Deeds

Exalt not the wise,
   So that the people shall not scheme and contend;
Prize not rare objects,
   So that the people shall not steal;
Shut out from site the things of desire,
   So that the people's hearts shall not be disturbed.

Therefore in the government of the Sage:
   He keeps empty their hearts
   Makes full their bellies,
   Discourages their ambitions,
   Strengthens their frames;
So that the people may be innocent of knowledge and desires.
And the cunning ones shall not presume to interfere.
   By action without deeds

What did the old shaman mean when he said to his apprentice,
“I am sorry you have become enlightened, now get back to
work.” ? Equally so in the Taoist or Toltec tradition the truth of
such knowledge is only useful in its application… Stillness and
activity support each other. Very often an excess of talent or intelect
is detrimental in the development of character to the fullest extent.
The simple truth is hard to see and nearly impossible to accept,
that we exist beyond the reach of personal history.

Inside Out

If we are constant within change

like the Sun which remains

bright even in secert at night

not only upon it's rising

then contentment is supreme

without the weeds of desire

clogging the portal of awareness

Blind allegiance selfish and uncaring

will never rise up to the heights

Gradual development is the surest way

where as prompt delivery

gained in haste is soon wasted

If you know the firing process

for the gold elixer of illumination

then you have the quality of humilty

with great power in virtue

This is the Spirit of Tao

not detached but engaged on principle

Mind of Tao

To activate the Mind of Tao
dissolve the human Mind
Day by day
Mundane energy wanes
Gradually
Celestial Energy grows
Ture Mind
Building the foundation
There is White within Black
Male within Female
One must use the Bellows
Self-refinement
Requires the True Lead
The Four Signs combine
The Five Elements
Are One Energy
The Three Treasures
Return to One
At the Edge of the Universe
Yin and Yang Merge
Unified Energy
Absolutely Open Nothingness
The State before Birth
Clear and Free
Round and bright
Unfixed to Form or Void
The Gold Elixir Burns
With Illumination
At the Heart
Of Heaven and Earth

This Burden

I did not ask for this burden

when one becomes two

In a moment

everything changes

that is when a teacher is needed

- chop wood carry water -

this is only the beginning

As the old Shaman will tell his

apprentice

'I am sorry that you have become

enlightened,

Now get back to work'

Waking up is nothing

living it free and undetected

in a world without vision

that is the challenge

How do you speak a laungage

that has no words?

In The Dark

We can live in the dark
without a spark
And call this the light
We can live all our life
In obediance to ignorance
and call this divine
We can worship our own
intelligence and believe
that what we achieve
is worth the price
Who is at the helm?
We are a nation of fools
In a world spun out of control
In our bid for power
Without honor or humility
there is no impeccability
We neglect the totality
of the Self

I don't know who gave birth to it.
It is older than God.

************************************
This verse is absolutely incredible…impossible to describe, but it fills me with eternity.  Meditating on this will be beautiful.

I heard a song for the first time called, “Mary, Did You Know?”…I was working with ceramics, cleaning this huge piece of greenware (holly tree), and the owner of the business was on the other side, working her little heart out too.

I heard the words to the song, and Winona Judd sang, “Mary, did you know that when you kissed your baby's cheek, you were kissing God?” (something like that) and into the silence, I blurted, “When you kiss any baby's cheek you are kissing God.”

Boy, did I get in trouble for that one…oops.

Somehow, this verse reminded me of that experience.  There is absolutely no limit on what the Tao is…it is everything and nothing, and cannot be described, just like v.1.

I still believe my statement, and I can't wait until my nephew is born so I may kiss a brand new eternally ancient Tao!!!  :)

Love to all of you!

Tao is a hollow vessel,
   And its use is inexhaustible!
Fathomless!

Yet dark like deep water it seems to remain.
