Hi anonymouspersona,

There are so many topics and styles of writing… that I could never recommend anything for you that isn't filled with my own biases, good and bad.

Can you tell us what you are passionate about, and the style of writing you like?

Take care,

Dave

I'm reading Leaves of Grass right now! I discovered it almost by accident in the school library, and now I read a bit every day. I'd never read Walt Whitman before, but I felt like he spoke my soul, which almost never happens. Actually, I'm not sure if that's ever happened to me before… But it was very beautiful.

Hi There,

The “great-ness” of a book really depends on the reader. Everyone enjoys different kinds of books…

If I am seeking some romance I look towards Nicholas Sparks. He's great with detail. I was unable to read one of his books without crying, or laughing out loud. The Notebook, Message In A Bottle, The Wedding, and The Choice are just a few of his, however they are all excellent in my opinion.

If you like Science Fiction, Try The Chronicles of Narnia. Many people believe that they are specifically from children, however in my opinion everyone can relate to these chronicles. They illustrate morals and values through the use of imagination. These books have enabled me to escape from reality!

If you enjoy books on life, I read a book on Oprah's Book Club called She's Come Undone. It's basically the story of the life development of a young girl, how she grew into the adult that she is. It's an absolutely bazzaire book. It constantly keeps you guessing. I odd thing about  it is that it is written by a male author, so basically it's a male percepective of what women go through, however if you touchy about sexuality and personal development I would sway away from this one.

So, Just a Few Suggestions for you! :)

This is a little bit of a different kind of suggestion but The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck is one of the best work of 'fiction' I've ever read and one that you will be thinking about long after you put it down.

You may find that you get just as much insight into humanity as any work of nonfiction.

I was just speaking to my neighbor about a fiction novel called The Master and the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It is an excellent commentary on the delicate state of Moscow, Russia in the early 20th Century. Satan arrives under the pretense of a magician along with a group of cronies to tempt  and damn the Muscovites in inventive and thrilling ways. This is one of a few intriguing plots in this well-written book. I loved it!

Another great book that heightened my awareness about the state of the world was Thom Hartmann's The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight. He refers to oil as ancient sunlight, carbon that has been locked in the earth's core for ages and has only begun to be tapped and drastically reduced in the last two centuries.  The book reflects his concern for the role of oil on many fronts and he also describes the other issues that we need to confront in the world,
i.e. water, television, lacking spiritual consciousness and loss of endemic species.
While the book can be overwhelming at times the third part reminds us that there are solutions available and that by making individual shift and connecting to indigenous ways of thinking,  we can find hope and be the change that we want to see in the world.

I also recommend a book by Jeffrey Rothfeder called Every Drop For Sale. Rothfeder reports on water as a growing commodity and potential for political conflict in the future. The book is very accessible for people like me, who struggle with non-fiction and lots of facts, and it was certainly an eye-opener to the value of this often-taken for granted resource.

I hope a few of these books appeal to you. Each one has definitely served me. Enjoy!

Almost all of Nicholars Sparks' Books are quite good.

Much Ado about Nothing (Shakesphere)  and Tales of the Grotesque  and Arabesque ( E. A. Poe) are oldies but goodies.

The Bluest Eye (Morrison) and Under the Blood Red Sun (Salisbury) are blue notes (aka tear jerkers)

As far as books that were life changing or atleast quite touching go:

Moral Apologetics:

The Nicomachiean Ethics (Philosophies of Aristotle) and Mere Christianity by CS Lewis

and
Boundaries ( Cloud & Townsend)

Although the word boundary may cause a person to think of physical boundaries, it addresses emotional and spiritual boundaries as well.

hi there

i would recommend you these two (after thinking a wee bit)

a. The Tree House: Eccentric Wisdom on How to Live, Love and See by Naomi Wolf. it’s about wisdom of naomi wolf’s father. how he sees life and lives the life fullest.

b. Incendiary by Chris Cleave. It’s a novel about about terrorism. How a mother and wife sees terrorism that kills her husband and only son, how she lives her life and sees the effects of the bombing for the majority of the people. How she survives (or not survives? depends on the reader). And nope…i’m not telling the end of the story. It’s simply blown me away. It made me cry and laugh at the same time. My professor gave me the book, saying “You’re a bit cuckoo you would enjoy this book.” He was right.

c. The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time by Mark Haddon. It’s about a 15 yo boy who has asperger’s syndrome. He knows how to do the math, but doesn’t know how to deal with people. It’s simply hilarious.

by the way, i still love the secret garden tho.

Hello!

There are soooooooo many great books.  The first one that started me on an insightful journey was “Many Lives, Many Masters” I read years ago, and don't have the author (sorry!)

Also, any books by Neale Donald Walsch!  (Read Conversations with God Books 1, 2, and 3 in order, though…….well, you don't have to, but they will make more sense, because he'll refer to his earlier books as you read the next) They are not “religious” but very insightful!

Good Luck on your quest!

I agree with  “I Know This Much is True” by Wally Lamb–AWESOME BOOK, but haven't read “She's Come Undone” yet, but heard it's great.

Any book by Alice Walker–especially “Temple of my Familiar”…there is another of my favorites by her but I read it so long ago I can't remember.

“The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse” by Louise Erdrich

“A New Earth” by Eckhart Tolle.  It will change your life.  “The Power of Now” is good, too, but I got more out of “A New Earth”.

“Cold Mountain” by Charles Fraizer

“Eat Pray Love”–can't remember the author but you will find it almost anywhere; it's a current bestseller.

Happy reading!

I read your blog on Cultural Creatives. Thank you for sharing that. I just joined the GAIA communtiy and, in fact haven't even looked up GAIA to know what these letters actually stand for yet. I'm excited to be apart of this community now and look forward to sharing and learning and fusing journeys through attunement. So many things I have been led to understand more from simply being open to the smallest of moments in life. I will enjoy learning more from you and want to thank you again for sharing this. I would also like to share with you some other books and videos I have been drawn to this last year.

Videos:
*What the Bleep Do We Know
*Waking Life
*The Secret ( which I'm sure you've seen and am always open to discuss as all the others I'm listing)
*Peaceful Warrior (which I've learned balances energy direction, focus, and perspective to enable the purest path to understanding the bigger picture of The Secret)
**quick note** I have witnessed some who seem to see using the power of attraction as a form of control. The Peaceful Warrior expounds on being more connected to others in this.
I'm excited in the fact that you too KES see that we are living in absolutely beautiful moments of existence while simultaneously witnessing the exponential expansion of it. I'm so grateful for becoming part of this community and am happy that I've chosen you as the first I've actually directly shared my journey with. I will be loving to learn more.
I also again recommend the book The Mindful Brain. And always remember … It is where you are, not where you are going.
Much love,
