I really believe in the good of the human spirit despite what our countries government as displayed as “The American Way”. I believe Americans have the power to make a huge contribution and difference in this world for all of the other people who are not as fortunate as we are. This isn't for only Americans, there are many countries out there who are inhabited by fortunate citizens.
There are people all over this world that are living on less per year than I make in one day, or one hour. We take our kids out for pizza, the money that could feed a starving family for a month. We go to the movies on a date, at least a few meals for hungry kids.
I am not asking you to give your money, just your ideas. I have joined http://www.one.org/ and I encourage each of you to do so. There is some pretty interesting information on there. We are part of one of the most powerful nations on the planet. Our government can start this change if we become a loud enough voice, just through increasing global trade. Your government can start this change if you insist.
According to EDUN website:
In 1980 Africa had a 6% share of world trade. By 2002 this had dropped to just 2% despite the fact that Africa has 12 % of the world's population.
If Africa could regain just an additional 1% share of global trade, it would earn $70 billion more in exports each year - more than three times what the region currently receives in international assistance. If in addition, all countries in East Asia, South Asia and Latin America were each to increase their share of world exports by 1%, the resulting gains in income could lift 128 million people out of poverty.
More about EDUN:
EDUN is a socially conscious clothing brand created by Ali Hewson, Bono and New York clothing designer Rogan Gregory. EDUN's aim is to bring the issue of long-term sustainable employment to the forefront via the world of high fashion.
If we can work together to increase trade to countries of less fortune than ours (which is most other countries) we can end poverty.
Statistics show that it is getting better but at a very slow rate. We could speed it up and save millions of lives. With as many people that are being born into America alone every year we have the manpower to be the difference.
This was the mortality rate for children under 5 in the 1960's:
This is the same statistic in 2000's:
But how many lives were lost in 40 years because more people didn't pitch in to be the difference.
I don't know about you, but every time I cook dinner or eat a meal I think of how fortunate I am to have food. Wouldn't it be nice to give that feeling to another person who has never known that feeling in their entire lives? We could increase their life expectancy and we could create a world where we are all equal and peace is found more readily.
It's got to start somewhere, why not with you?
Please join this fight against poverty. Throw out your ideas of what we could do locally in each of our communities to get the attention of other people who can help make a difference, and then act on your ideas.
I have also started a group on yahoo, specifically for us zaadzsters who want to make a difference in the poverty of the world. Feel free to join there as well.
