Questions & Reflections

Laozi at the back of his water buffalo

The idea behind this pod on Gaia Community:

Together we share thoughts about philosophical Daoism, in Mandarin it is called: Dàojiā。It is a philosophical way to revise and change ourselves to be a better person.

It sounds strange perhaps, but in China it isn't so popular as in the west. In China, Taiwan, Singapore people are more interested in Dàojiào, religious Daoism. But Dàojiā and Dàojiào have common ground in thinking. Dàojiā is older than Dàojiào.

We try to bring the thoughts from LăozÄ and ZhuāngzÄ  into practice. We can share thoughts about the reactions from other people, the problems that we meet, how we should deal with difficult situations when we apply the philosophy which finally should become our natural way. We try to stimulate each other to find our way, which is for each person different. Because we all are on our way and to avoid that we are lost or go astray, because that looks mostly easier, we can read the DàodéjÄ«ng, the book of 5000 words that LăozÄ wrote. And there are many translations from it.

When you join, you are already attracted to these thoughts, and you are totally free to give your thoughts and ideas, bring in new topics and we will respect them. There are no good or bad ideas or thoughts in our messages because we are all different. That is why we share our thoughts. We share to learn from each other.

We also can read other books like the ZhuāngzÄ, WénzÄ, etc.

What we call now the DàodéjÄ«ng,it was found in MăwángduÄ«  (Horseking's Hill )1973 nearby Chángshā the capital of the Hunan province in China. it seemed to have been existed in another form, the revised form, actually DédàojÄ«ng , it was buried together with a nobleman in 168 BC. But in October 1993, in a tomb of the Warring States period (475-221 BC) at Guōdiàn  in Hubei province there was found an other version of the DàodéjÄ«ng  on bamboo-slip material with substantial different text.

There is now also an older text version, commented by the scholar
Héshànggōng (1st/2nd century  A.D.) this text and the interpretation are substantial differently and surprisingly new. The DàodéjÄ«ng proves to be a less philosophical treatise or a practical lesson for life:  making  a quiet spirit and a life without hunting on pleasing, the sage withstands the ca-price of destiny and death.

I also try to find good articles to read for background information.

DàodéjÄ«ng Chapter 70  by Jonathan Star

My teachings are very easy to understand
     and very easy to practice
Yet so few in this world understand
and so few are able to practice

My words arise from that ancient source
My actions are those of the universe itself
If people do not know these
   how can they know me?

Those who follow my ways are rare
            and so I treasure them
Even if they wear the clothes of a beggar
they carry a priceless gem within

Here you can find the stories about Lăozĭ and Zhuāngzĭ in English.

I have translated these stories in Dutch at my Space:

I want to note that I recently discovered that there are two different stories about LăozÄ's life and where he supposed to have lived in or nearby Luoyang in Henan province.  One story can be found here on this website in Hongkong. And the other one is that he has lived in Guoyang in Anhui province.
