(If I am for some reason unable to help you, I will spend my time in research, or do my best to find someone else who can help you.)
Counseling FAQ
Who are you, anyway?
I live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with my wonderful best friend and husband for the last 13 years, as well as five cats and one (litter trained!) house rabbit. if you wish, you can find out a lot more about me on my Ziki, United Communities of Spirit, and my blog, Journey to Awakening.
I've been fully trained as a spiritual and chemical dependency counselor, and I'm currently working on completing my degree in Transpersonal Psychology. As a long-time student of comparative religions and alternative spiritualities, I have spent a great deal of time in self-reflection and meditation. I've studied under several teachers, some of them well known and others not. I spent a wonderful year in a seminary when I was considering becoming a minister, but I soon discovered that such a career would severely limit my path, which has always been to discover and celebrate the common thread running through all spiritualities and share what I learn with others. As a bit of a natural-born teacher, I've also been able to collect a great many resources over the years for helping others.
What sort of training did you receive?
I have degrees from American River College in Sacramento, California, in human services, psychology, and chemical dependency counseling. Studies specialized in group counseling techniques and the pharmacology of addictive substances.
I also have a degree in Liberal Arts from Harrisburg Area Community College, and I spent a year at Lancaster Theological Seminary, both of which are in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Non-formal counseling education includes 10 years' experience working with addicted persons, a small portion of which was spent as an intern at the Charter Hospital rehabilitation unit (now defunct) in Roseville, California. I have since kept up on addiction and psychological studies through articles in professional journals and online.
Non-formal spiritual education includes a lifetime of self-motivated study and analysis of many and varied spiritual paths, including paganism, Eastern philosophies, Christian history, theology, and comparative studies. Among topics studied in seminary were pastoral counseling, Biblical analysis, Christian history and theology, research methods, and spiritual self-analysis. I spent many hours of my own time in the libraries studying the Gnostic texts and the early forms of Christianity in order to get a more accurate view of this particular religion.
Personal spiritual practices include Yoga (Raja, Kundalini, OM, and Hatha), meditation, contemplation, contemplative prayer, fasting, shamanic journeying, magic, and vision questing. I have some past experience in the use of entheogens under supervision.
Spiritual Lodges and Groups that I've either belonged to, worked with, or am a close friend or relative of one or more of its members include The Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn, Ordo Templi Orientis, Temple of Set, Rosicrucians (AMORC), The Alchemy Guild, and the Order of Bards, Ovates, & Druids. I spent a short time studying with Swami Nityananda at Shanti Mandir ashram where I received shaktipat, and I am a student of Tibetan Buddhism under Khentrul Lodro Thaye Rinpoche in the Vajrayana lineage of Red Tara, and I have taken the precepts (vows of ethical conduct) and refuge vows. I am a member of the local sangha, Dungkar Ling.
What qualifies you to offer me advice?
That's a tough question, but here is my best answer:
In actuality, no one can really help you but YOU. I can offer you advice based on my experience, training, and intuition, but ultimately, the answers to most spiritual questions can be found inside of yourself. This may sound like a trite phrase to many, but I've come to see the truth of this as I've grown older and, hopefully, wiser.
In order to access our inner wisdom (which absolutely EVERYONE has, by the way), we have to learn to hear its inner voice. That can only be done through learning to quiet the thinking mind through practices like meditation, yoga, prayer, and contemplation or, if you're an artist, through painting, playing a musical instrument, writing a sonnet, or perhaps sculpting. Find the activity (or non-activity!) that makes time for you fly by and leaves you feeling refreshed and invigorated. Find something that makes you flow. Then …. just listen. If you want some help in learning this skill, just ask!
So what do I need you for, then? I'll just ask my inner voice!
If you know how to do that, then by all means, go for it!
But the unfortunate fact is that most folks don't know how to do this, and they can use a little help. Not everyone can see their own path clearly at all times. In today's busy world, not everyone has spent years in meditation in order to help their agitated minds slow down. Therefore, not everyone can access that inner voice at all times. Painful emotions like grief, confusion, stress, anger, an fear can block that Inner Voice. This does not mean that these people are incapable of doing this, or that they're somehow “less than” those who can! In today's society, being able to tune in to our link to the Ancient Wisdom is not taught in our culture, and I believe that reaching out to those who are suffering because of this disconnection is the best thing I can do with my life.
Ok, so what do you offer?
If you feel spiritually lost and have questions or concerns about the direction of your spiritual life, or if you're battling an addiction issue, or even if you just want someone to talk to, I am offering my talents and resources to help. I'm offering non-religious yet spiritual caring guidance, grounded in experience and education. I have many tools and references at my disposal to assist you in your search, and I care deeply about getting you the help that you need.
My Promises to You
1. I will always try to respond in a timely fashion (within 24-48 hours).
2. I will respond to your concern in a professional and ethical manner.
3. I will take your question or request for guidance seriously, and give you in return access to my experience, skill, and resources in order to move forward.
But is this really a free service?
Well, it depends on how you look at it.
Ah HA! I knew it!
Of course, this service is not really free. If you find that I've actually helped you in some small way, you must agree to help someone else in need in the future. If you find that I did NOT help you, please let me know why so I can improve.
Oh. That's it?
Yes.
Why are you doing this, anyway?
Based on years of spiritual study and meditation, I've come to the same conclusion that others have: we are all interconnected, and helping others be happy helps me to be happy, too! I've been searching for ways to give back to my community, and Zaadz is offering me this opportunity to put my skills to use by reaching out to people and, hopefully, alleviating some of the suffering in the world. It's admittedly a very small contribution, but for every person I help who agrees to help someone else in turn, we can eventually heal the world and bring peace.
I hope that our journeys cross soon.
Blessings,
Morgan
